Many people have sought to reduce their usage of plastic. Ambili Prasannakumar found the sheer amount of plastic products in her own house to be too much to handle.
“It’s difficult to spend a day without coming across the plastic. Whether it’s milk cartons, food packages, food containers, water bottles, feminine hygiene items, and the list goes on,” the Pathanamthitta native adds.
Ambili discovered an alternate approach to repurpose plastic to lessen the quantity of plastic found in her garbage at the end of the day.
It is tough to eliminate plastic from our life. Even if we strive to utilize cloth bags and other alternatives, plastic’s reign does not end there. I had an idea when thinking about how to clean the plastic coverings at home. “I questioned, ‘Why don’t I reuse the plastic without affecting the environment?” said Ambili.
She decided to make a plastic table mat or carpet out of the plastic coverings. The use of plastic mats also protects the table from being exposed to heat from the vessel.
Ambili began making the mats during the lockdown, and she no longer buys mats from outside. She claims that the mats may be used for many years and that they are also washable.
“I make the mat from old nightgowns and other clothing from around the house. The table mats would undoubtedly look nicer if people know how to embroider, she says.
Turning plastics into carpets
The proprietor of K&D Thread House also claims that she hasn’t accepted any orders for her mats yet, but she is teaching people how to manufacture them.
This simple table mat and carpet may be made at home by anyone. There is no need to take orders and turn them into a company. I get a lot of calls about the mat, but I always show people how to manufacture it. I want others to reuse plastic productively at home, just like I do, without affecting the environment. That is all I hope to do by manufacturing these mats,” Ambili says.
In the same manner, the 44-year-old intends to produce fruit basket coverings.
Simple Steps To Make Plastic Table Mats
A scissor, two pieces of cloth, cleaned plastic coverings, a needle and thread, and laces are needed for the simple plastic mat.
To begin, cut the cleaned plastic coverings or flattened plastic into “any form, according to your preferences.” It might take the form of a rectangle or a circle. “Similarly, the two fabric pieces should be trimmed to the same size as the plastic cover,” Ambili suggests.
The plastic cover should be put between the two cloth pieces for the second stage. “The sides should next be sewn using a needle and thread.” “You may accomplish this with a sewing machine or by hand stitching,” Ambili explains.
Ambili continues, “After the mat is sewed together, it may be laced with lovely embroidery for a more appealing look and design.”
