Bringing the automobile industry up to date on recycled materials

TotalEnergies and Plastic Omnium have established a collaboration to create and develop innovative plastic compounds manufactured from recycled polypropylene. To that end, the firms have formed a strategic collaboration to combine their invention and technical talents. To develop new forms of recycled materials suited for use in the automotive sector, to help the industry’s far-reaching change.

Recycling has advantages that go beyond just diverting precious plastic materials from landfills or incineration. The new materials, which will comprise 20% to 100% recycled materials generated from industrial and residential waste streams. Which will also have a CO2 impact that is up to six times lower than utilizing virgin materials.

“This partnership with Plastic Omnium is a great example of collaboration and innovation to develop ever-higher and environmentally friendly recycled plastic materials,” said Valérie Goff, Senior Vice President, Polymers at TotalEnergies.

Plastics have an important role in reducing carbon emissions from the automobile sector. They make it simpler to enhance aerodynamic performance and lower total vehicle weight. Which helps to minimize the quantity of fuel required by internal combustion cars and boost the autonomy of electric vehicles.

They must, however, fulfill the high aesthetic and safety criteria that apply in the care sector, making the use of recycled materials an exceptionally difficult prospect.

“Recycling plastic materials is a problem for us as manufacturers and a critical issue for our world,” Stéphane Nol, President, and CEO of Plastic Omnium Intelligent Exterior Systems stated.

“This exciting collaboration lays the path for more integrated and ecologically responsible actions. That match our customers’ and suppliers’ carbon neutrality ambitions.”
